The well known Japanese Consulate rush:
Aim: Get a considerable amount of ashis and clubs/bows fairly early. Japanese has a slow start, so this should keep you in the game.
Cards needed:
300 wood, 300 export, 5 ashis, 600 wood, 4 vills, rest is standard
BO:
Discovery
• Build as many shrines with your starting wood as you can, don't get the gold crates yet
• Send 300 wood as first shipment
• Age up with about 12 vills with the shrine wonder (build it with 2 vills)
Transition:
• Keep vills on food, until you can queue a vill, then keep 5 vills+shrines on food, rest on wood
• Gather the 300 wood crate, build a consulate with 1 vill.
• You want to get 30 pop and 200 wood before you hot colonial. As soon as you have 30 pop (=TC+2 shrines) and 200 wood, distribute your vills on food and gold. This depends on treasures, and starting crates. 300 wood start: probably 5 gold, rest food. 200 wood + 100 gold start: probably 2 gold rest food.
Colonial:
• Send 300 export asap
• Build a rax with your 200 gathered wood asap
• TC waypoint to food
• Once the export arrives (and only then!) ally with the japanese insulation. Start spamming clubs or shinobis (I prefer shinobis, they can go stealth, so you can lure your opponent into a fight he cannot win)
• Start spamming ashis from rax (you will have to make a choice, either you spam more ashis early on, or you keep constant vill production, make this dependant on the civ you are facing)
• Send 5 ashis next (but it's up to you really)
• If done correctly, you should have about 20 ashis and 8-9 bows at the 6:30-6:40 min mark.
How to carry on:
• As you will be housed now, I tend to send 600 wood, put shrines on wood, and start shrine spamming, this will make your eco explode.
• Against xbow civs it might be better to make yamabushi clubs, they are fast, can force the xbows into melee while your ashis shoot away
Pros:
• You have a solid military force quite early. This should help getting over the Japanese early colonial weakness
• Most people don't expect Japan to have a high military count early, so you might be able to rush him
• You have an early consulate (=5% extra atk for your units)
• Your ashi+shinobi army is very siege heavy, FFs won't work vs this
• You have a 2 unit early army, usually > 1 unit army
Cons:
• Early eco is quite weak, sending 600 wood let's you get your hrine boom going nicely though
• Even with clubs+ ashi this will have problems against a xbow spam. But Japan always has problems against xbow spams, simply because their cav is too expensive to spam with ashis early on.
